Did I ever tell you that
I love it when you sleep?
because when you're in your dreamland
I can have a moment's peace

For I think not of my bruises,
or my debts that need be paid
when I see your slumbering person
in the bed that you have laid

And though you're years older than I,
you're the only child that I'll need.
For even though you hurt me so,
God, I love it when you sleep!

I'd never seen you so at ease.
When you sleep it feels like Heaven
You look so safe, you look so soft,
you look relaxed, and gentle, even.

You have no heart to hurt me
with those eye close lightly
and I forget about all the times
that you grabbed my throat so tightly.

I don't see the blood on your knuckles,
on your pistol, or on your coat.
When you're in your pretty dreamland
I can pretend, I can hope.

I can run my fingers through your hair
which makes me smile without fail.
Your face says you couldn't hurt a fly,
and I don't care that we're both beyond the pale

And when you smile, I can pretend
you're smiling just for me
though I know that you're dreaming
of beautiful girls that come free.

Did I ever tell you, dear,
I love it when you sleep
because when you're in your dreamland
I can pretend that you love me
a poem written through the eyes of a girl with an abusive boyfriend.

A very well-written poem. But this just explains all the things about that girl's life state. Poor thing. She doesn't deserve this.
